Meta Expands Passkey Support to Facebook for Enhanced Security

Meta Platforms has announced the integration of passkey support on its popular Facebook platform, enhancing security and simplifying user logins. The company described passkeys as the next-generation password standard that offers a more secure alternative to traditional passwords. The feature is anticipated to be available soon for mobile devices running on Android and iOS, and it will also be extended to the Messenger platform in the coming months.

In a post detailing the new feature, Meta emphasized that passkeys allow users to auto-fill payment information during transactions using Meta Pay, thereby making online purchases more convenient. This addition follows the previous rollout of passkeys for WhatsApp on Android last October and on iOS just a few months later.

According to Meta, passkeys enhance security by utilizing biometrics or the device lock PIN code for authentication. This method not only improves the login experience but also makes it significantly more resistant to phishing and account compromise attempts, as they are less vulnerable to being stolen than traditional passwords.

Recently, industry developments have signaled a shift toward passwordless authentication. Microsoft has set passkeys as the default sign-in method for new consumer accounts, highlighting a broader industry trend to enhance online security. Apple has also previewed features allowing users to manage their passkeys across multiple devices, indicating widespread acceptance of this technology across major platforms.
