MathWorks reports ransomware breach exposed data of 10,476 individuals

MathWorks said a ransomware gang stole the data of 10,476 individuals after breaching its network in April, according to filings with state attorneys general.

The company disclosed the attack on May 27, linking ongoing outages to a ransomware incident that disrupted access to several internal systems used by staff and customers, including multi-factor authentication (MFA), single sign-on (SSO), the MathWorks cloud center, file exchange, the license center and the online store.

The breach was identified on May 18, more than a month after attackers gained access, according to a Maine Attorney General filing.

Massachusetts data breach notification letters filed with the state AG’s office indicate the ransomware group stole documents containing personal information of affected individuals, including a combination of names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security Numbers and other identifiers.

To date, MathWorks has not disclosed the name of the ransomware operation behind the breach, and no group has claimed responsibility. The absence of a claim suggests the company may still be negotiating or may have paid a ransom, though officials did not comment publicly.

Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, MathWorks employs about 6,500 people in 34 offices worldwide. Its MATLAB numeric computing platform and Simulink simulation suite are used by more than 100,000 organizations and more than 5 million customers globally.
